  • If you're new to 4HOnline, or want detailed instructions, check out this user guide or this video.
  • These trainings are only available to screened adult volunteers. If your name doesn't appear in 4HOnline, you probably need to renew as a volunteer.

Creating a welcoming 4-H environment: Engaging, encouraging, and respectful

Being part of a group, welcomed and respected is a priority in 4-H clubs and groups. A welcoming environment results in young people who are actively engaged and feel valued. This training covers four parts of a welcoming environment: safety, support, interaction and engagement.

When young people join a 4-H program, they join for fun - but learning is the result. They learn about life skills, communications, problem solving and decision making through their projects and activities. What they learn through 4-H will help them in future careers and relationships.

4-H project leaders: Where the action starts

4-H has a large range of projects - and for members, projects can be the most important part of 4-H. 4-H’ers plan their projects, and once they're complete, share their learning and accomplishments in various ways in their community. But a project is just a way of learning independence, generosity, mastery and belonging. 4-H volunteers guide young people in this process. That’s an important duty.

Managing 4-H clubs: A guide for club leaders

Club leaders have a very important role. You are a mentor, a motivator for young people, an organizer and coordinator with other adults in your club, and a liaison with the larger 4-H organization in your area. Extension staff designed this module to help with some of the typical management issues in 4-H clubs and bring all these pieces together to build an environment where young people thrive and grow.

County financial practices

Understanding the policies and procedures in place to protect county Council or Federation 4-H financial resources is vital to protecting those resources and, more importantly, to creating a quality learning experience for the youth treasurer. This module covers those policies and procedures, including the respective roles of the youth treasurer, adult treasurer and Program Coordinator/Director.

Ensuring a safe 4-H environment

Physical and emotional safety is part of a high-quality youth development 4-H program. There is good research that shows what makes some youth programs better than others, and we in Minnesota 4-H apply this research to our program. In order for youth to have a quality experience, 4-H volunteers must first ensure that young people feel safe and supported.

Keeping youth in 4-H

4-H clubs often wish they had more members. What is often overlooked, is keeping the members they already have. Keeping youth in 4-H doesn't just happen. Youth programs that actively engage members in meaningful ways keep them coming back. If they're not engaged, they may find that their time is better spent elsewhere.
