Role description for independent mentors

Purpose

Support the independent 4-H member in goal-setting, planning, completing and reflecting on his or her experience and in fulfilling the annual guidelines for Independent Membership.

Time required

October 1 - September 30 of the 4-H year

Responsibilities

  • Assist Independent 4-H Member with the completion of yearly enrollment materials and Independent Member Agreement Form.

  • Meet with 4-H member a minimum of six times throughout the year to discuss progress toward goals and celebrate achievement.

  • Inform and encourage member, parents and other volunteers to participate actively in appropriate 4-H opportunities.

This role is ideal for an individual with

  • A sincere interest in teaching and sharing knowledge and skills with youth and adults in an educational setting.

  • The ability to effectively support the member in taking responsibility for their independent status.

  • The ability to work and communicate effectively in both verbal and written form.
